Since the beginning of our Nation, the Infantry has led the fight.
On June 14th, 1775, the Continental Congress authorized ten companies of riflemen to be raised for the new Continental Army. We recognize this day as the Army’s birthday, but it is more specifically the birth of the Infantry. Amateur Soldiers and Minutemen made up these initial ten companies. Men full of commitment and a deep passion for our Nation’s freedom. 250 years later, today’s Infantry is an elite fighting force that shares the same dedication to upholding our freedom.
2025 at the National Infantry Museum is set to be a full year of celebration. Visitors can explore collection highlights and behind-the-scenes details through our curated Heritage Information Guides. The first issue of guides highlights historical anniversaries in February and selections from one of our Curators, Chris Goodrow. The guide can be viewed online here or pick up a hard copy at the visitors’ desk at the front of the museum.
Let’s Celebrate!
On the official birthday of June 14th, the museum will host a grand-scale community event in collaboration with Fort Moore. This joint celebration will take the place of FreedomFest, the Independence Day destination for Columbus and the Chattahoochee valley.
During the day-long birthday celebration, the galleries will spring to life with interactive Soldiers in full period dress. Visitors have the unique opportunity for a helicopter ride (with ticket purchase) by the Friends of Army Aviation, taking off from Inouye Field. The Maneuver Center of Excellence Band will keep the party going all day! Visitors will enjoy the similar food trucks, bounce houses, and free movies of FreedomFest but coupled with extra Army specialties and appearances for a once in a lifetime event. Check back in as the 250th Anniversary year progresses for updates and news.
