Fellow Soldiers travel to the National Infantry Museum to memorialize comrades
November 8, 2013 – Four Soldiers who were part of Bravo Company, 1st Battalion, 508th Parachute Infantry Regiment, will be memorialized at a tree dedication ceremony on Veterans Day at the National Infantry Museum.
The brief ceremony will begin at 2 p.m. on the Memorial Walk of Honor, just south of the parade field and stadium.
Laurence Batterson, a resident of California and the father of one of the four, purchased the trees to honor his son and his fellow Soldiers. Batterson learned about the museum’s Memorial Tree program during a visit here for his son’s graduation from training at Fort Benning.
Batterson said it was just something he wanted to do. “It helps me to get along with the passing of my son. He thought so highly and respected the Infantry Museum. And doing this, it helps keep his soul alive, along with the Soldiers who went before him, those who are present and those yet to come.”
The men who served as battalion commander and command sergeant major of the unit at the time will attend the ceremony, as will local members of the unit and a vanload of Soldiers from Fort Bragg, North Carolina, where the unit is headquartered.
