IMAX film salutes veterans on 70th anniversary of fateful battle
The National Infantry Museum will provide free admission to D-Day 3D: Normandy 1944 to WWII veterans and their families on Friday, June 6, the 70th anniversary of D-Day.
“This is one small way we can say ‘thank you’ to the veterans who survived that historic assault,” said National Infantry Foundation President Ben Williams. “We want them to know that our country’s appreciation for them is as strong today as it was seven decades ago.”
In addition to free admission to the movie, World War II veterans will be honored by museum staff with a lapel pin and certificate of appreciation for their service.
In 1944, the Second World War had reached its peak, and the Allied forces were planning to retake Nazi-occupied Europe by launching one massive surprise attack. Seventy years after the invasion that changed history, this film brings the story of Operation Overlord to the IMAX® 3D screen for the first time, providing both a new perspective to the invasion and a fitting tribute to those who were there to carry it through.
Narrated by renowned journalist Tom Brokaw, the 43-minute movie explores the science, technology, strategy and most importantly the human element behind the events of that fateful landing on the beaches of Normandy. Through dramatic reenactments, CGI animation and breathtaking cinematography, the film brings this important event to life and helps explain how it not only changed the course of the war, but also changed the course of history.
In addition to viewing the film, veterans and their families are invited to traverse the Last 100 Yards ramp, on which the scaling of the beaches at Normandy is depicted with lifelike cast figures. They may also want to tour the museum’s World War II gallery and its collection of weapons, uniforms, personal items, and rare memorabilia.
D-Day 3D: Normandy 1944, recommended for all audiences, will be shown at least three times a day at the National Infantry Museum’s IMAX Theatre. Tickets cost $8 for adults, $7 for students/seniors/military and $6 for children 4-12 and are available for purchase at the IMAX ticket counter in the theater lobby. For showtimes, click here.
